Oct 2019 First Friday – Art History X Denim on Models

For our October 2019 First Friday, Nicola Merriman, a local Richmond artist, presented Artemis Gallery guests with models clad in her Hand Painted Art History Denim Jackets and puzzle piece earrings. The event was a HIT! Not only was the gallery packed, but we sold many of Nicola’s pieces. Here are some fun shots from the night! Photo Creds to Graham Jennings Media and Valeria Moreno.

More about Nicola: Nicola Merriman was born in the United Kingdom and spent most of her childhood growing up in West Virginia, USA. She attended Davis & Elkins College to study art education. What Nicola enjoys most, is doing emotional portraiture using oil paints. She plays with layers, light, and color in these paintings. Currently, Nicola is working on a wearable art series. The first jacket showed the image “Hygeia” by Gustave Klimt. The wearable art series allows her to refer to her passion for art history. https://nicolajaymerriman.com/

We are thrilled to Welcome Samantha Catron as our new Artist of the month at Artemis Gallery!

This is an exhibition you won’t want to miss!

Ceramic Contradictions – June 2019 First Friday

Ceramic is an old art form dating back to the bronze age. in 3,500 BCE the first wheel was made out of ceramic. The art form continued to be used for functionality. It wasn’t until much later that ceramics started being created simply for aesthetics. Our exhibition, “Ceramic Contradictions”, explores the dichotomy between simple use and art form ceramics. We had the pleasure of hosting many talented, experienced ceramic artists as seen on our press release. The show was hit and was repeated for July First Friday!

Artwork by Sozra – May 2019 First Friday

Mystical and geometrical, this collection of multimedia paintings and prints by Sozra, John Sosnowsky, will take your breath away and leave you inspired. We had the pleasure of having his works in our gallery since May First Friday. There are only a couple days left before we return the pieces to their artist and make room for a new artist’s works. We also havea permanent display of his hand crafted jewelry. Talk about multi-talented!

Mixed Media Salon 1 & 2 – Nov & Dec 2018 First Friday

One of Artemis Gallery’s main goals is to act as a launching pad for new artists trying to get established. Typically galleries charge a substantial application or jury fee for exhibitions, let a lone a display fee if your work gets accepted, and on top of all that a hefty commission if you’re lucky enough to sell anything. obviously most new artists can’t afford this, only leaving room for the already established artists. However, everyone must start somewhere. There have been countless incredibly talented artists, who’s profound creations deserved our attention, but they never got the opportunity to be exhibited. Bills must be paid and sooner or later these artists resort to full time jobs to make ends meat, making it difficult or impossible to continue the pursuit of art. Here at Artemis, we are dedicated to fighting against this repeated tragedy.

This calling was our inspiration for our November 2018 (and past years) Mixed Media Salon. We reached out to many young artists for submissions. The poster above was hung in all the VCU Arts buildings to give students a chance to exhibit their work outside of academia possibly for the first time. The Response was tremendous! We accepted all mediums, hence “Mixed Media”, making for a vibrant show of great variety. With the Holiday season approaching, we wanted to give gallery patrons a chance to pick out handcrafted gifts that would have sentimental value in contrast to something bought off Amazon last minute. Our artists were proud to display their work and many of them sold multiple pieces. Talk about a confidence boosts!

This was such a popular concept we had another artist call to replace what was sold in November and ran the exhibition, “Mixed Media Salon 2” for the December First Friday.

Style Weekly wrote a lovely article of our September First Friday Shoe Show

Read what they wrote! “Shoe Fetish: Artemis Gallery reaches out to artists to recycle shoes for an exhibit”

Marilyn Monroe said, “Give a girl the right shoes and she can conquer the world.”

Give a group of artists the right shoes and the result is “Exoctica: Stilettos and Street,” a new show of re-imagined footwear at Artemis Gallery.

Owner John Crutchfield has a tradition of doing workshop shows, inviting a diverse group of artists and would-be artists to participate in a day of creativity that results in an exhibit. In 2013, the medium was bras and corsets, in 2014, masquerade masks. Sunglasses were the starting point in 2015 and boots in 2016. After a year off, he was eager for another show.

“I got the idea from fashion shows in Europe where I saw the wildest shoes I’d ever seen,” he recalls. It was enough to inspire him to scour antique shops in search of shoes to use as starting points for creating whimsical objects, although they sat unused for a year when he got busy with other projects. Finally, this summer, inspiration arrived.

Alice Anne Ellis’ contribution, “Temple of the Foot” began life as a burgundy suede platform pump before she added ivy sprouting from the shoe and a wine glass from which tumble slips of paper with quotes. Leah Anderson’s “Hermes, the Messenger” grew out of a low-top sneaker adorned with feathers, splashes of gold and pink and orange triangles of Plexiglas.

For Crutchfield, the workshops offer a means to utilize supplies he has on hand, items as varied as seashells, artificial flowers, clocks, crystals and fans. “I’ve been collecting materials for 25 to 30 years,” he explains. “These workshops are a way to recycle and create something new from them.”

To glean who might be interested in participating in the workshops, he sends out feelers on Facebook and Instagram, puts out the word to artists he knows and mentions the workshop to everyone who comes in the gallery. Despite the heat and vacations, when the call for artists went out in August, enough people showed up to create 18 shoes for the exhibit.

“Exoctica: Stilettos and Street” occupies a central location inside Artemis Gallery, an eclectic gallery space established on Main Street in 1997. Unlike most local galleries, which, according to Crutchfield, “focus on walls,” Artemis features arts and crafts created by artists from all over the country. Funky and colorful, the gallery is home to things as varied as detailed pencil drawings of rock royalty such as the Who, the Stones, Led Zeppelin, mosaics, ceramics and hand-blown glass. In this catholic atmosphere, a shoe show makes perfect sense.

“There Was an Old Shoe Mother,” crafted by Crutchfield and Charles Sharp, brings together an army boot with vintage cardboard cutouts of children popping up all over the boot and decorated with brightly colored plastic beads and shapes. “We even made a little door for Mother to come out from,” he says, pointing to a flap on the boot’s side.

Far more ethereal, “Starry Night USA” by Emily Saez features a boot painted an inky blue and covered in stars and sequins with a gold pipe cleaner for a shoelace.

The flamboyance of the gallery’s arts and crafts, along with lower prices, tends to attract a younger audience. Often, he sees people drop in expecting to spend 10 minutes but getting lost in the gallery’s fantasy world and wind up spending an hour or more.

“So many older people’s houses are already full of art. Millennials can afford us, so we appeal to people with their first apartment or house who’ve just begun collecting.”

For Crutchfield, the appeal is not just who comes to see the myriad objects in his gallery, but that the workshops for exhibits such as the high heel show attract a wide-ranging and different group of artists every time.

“A show like this reaches people beyond VCU’s art school,” he says. “It reaches people who want to be artists, who want to be part of an artistic process based on their interest in creativity. The fact that we make things in groups makes us a different kind of gallery.” S

“Exoctica: Stilettos and Street” runs through Oct. 26 at Artemis Gallery, 1601 W. Main St. artemisgalleryrichmond.com.

Exclusive Behind The Scenes Look at the our 2018 September Exotica High Heels Shoe Show

For about a year we have been thinking about doing a handmade shoe show show at Artemis Gallery. Using the same workshop concept we’ve used in the past for our group artist themed exhibitions (i.e. Boots Show of 2016, Sunglasses Show of 2015, Masquerade Mask Show of 2014, and Bra/Corset Show 2013)

Everyone wears shoes on a daily basis its one of the most essential elements of our society. “No shoes, No service”. So why not create a fine art gallery show based on the shoe and all its connotations!?

The idea fully formed when we found the most outrageous high heels in an antique store during a quick trip to New York. We bought an entire box full so there’d be plenty four our artists to turn into masterpieces. We began organizing a unique cast of artist/characters to be participants in out show, by reaching out through Facebook and email. The response was tremendous! we ended up with 13 participants some om whom designed more than one shoe. The studio session was a blast! We enjoyed music, food, wine, creativity, and conversation with fellow artists. Some artists’ friends came to observe and ended up sitting down to make their own shoe because the energy was just too contagious to resist. by the end of the session we had 18 shoe masterpieces!

Artemis Gallery Presents “Dogs Gone Wild Unleashed” by Artist Rusty Hammer

For our June 2018 First Friday, We hosted Florida folk artist Rusty Hammer who has created  a whole new litter of his wonderfully whimsical, wooden dogs!

These eccentric dogs are made out of pine and found object wood left over from other projects. Most people consider them to be Outsider Art or Folk Art since rusty doesn’t go by a formal MFA program. All Rusty’s work reflects his hysterical sense of humor, combining dog and human features and characterizations!

Rusty was present at our exhibition and chatted with all the dog/art lovers who visited our enlightened establishment. We were lucky enough to have live music by Norman Norteldor his daughter and his wife. The entire event was an outrageous blast!

Chrysalis Metamorphic Silk Light Sculptures by Barbara Woods

Artemis Gallery is currently featuring Silk Lantern Light Sculptures by Barbara Woods!

Barbara Woods is an artist from Santa Fe, New Mexico. Her experience in the textile industry dates back over 30 years and includes designing and constructing everything from ski parkas and large tents to a clothing line and functional art. In 1988 she began studying the eastern techniques of Shibori, Katazome and Batik while experimenting with surface design on textile.

The Gutta Serti technique is her preferred choice for silk-painting. A strong background in tailoring and pattern drafting allowed her to create unique one-of-a-kind clothing. From 1990 through 1996 Barbara owned and operated the Wood silks Clothing Gallery in Santa Fe. Wood silks Clothing Gallery represented her work as well as works by textile artists from around the USA. The gallery specialized in custom hand-painted silk clothing, loomed knits and hand-weaving serving a worldwide clientele. In 1996 she closed the retail gallery to concentrate on her art.

Appealing to a broader audience, Barbara developed and sold a line of painted silk lampshades for the Buyers Market of American Crafts in Philadelphia. Then in 1998 she began designing a silk & ceramic sculptural light. Working in slab-constructed clay she carves and forms the bases and bodies. Using patinas and paint she adds color to go with the painted silk. The results are free standing lighted sculptures and sconces, some depicting winged wall creatures. She continues developing unique lamp shades in painted silk in a collaborative effort with H. Tom Thomas, her husband and partner.

Barbara Wood’s Silk Light Sculptures are currently on display at the Artemis Gallery, 1601 W Main Street!

John T. Crutchfield listed as a Top Artist in Richmond Times Dispatch, Sunday July 29th 2012

By: Times-Dispatch Staff | Times-Dispatch
Published: July 29, 2012

RICHMOND, Va. –A band played outside Artemis Gallery as dusk set on Richmond’s Main Street.

People were standing outside the art opening, but there was one character you

couldn’t miss. John T. Crutchfield was wearing large sunglasses with metallic

stripes across the lenses (he made them himself), a straw hat and a scarf.

Crutchfield, the owner of Artemis Gallery, specializes in metallic art graphics. The lights

in the gallery sparkle on his customized musical instruments with metallic features and

nostalgic images. His work has been featured on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and in Vogue.

He participates in art and music festivals and has applied his art to a $10,000 guitar for musician

Robert Francis, who toured with singer Jason Mraz. Crutchfield’s art also has appeared at

the Amsterdam Whitney Gallery in New York.

Crutchfield started putting customized designs on instruments after a musician gave him a broken guitar.

But his style extends beyond instruments and includes jewelry, clocks, sculptures and more.

Ever since he was 5, art has been a part of his life. His parents wanted him to be a scientist.

“I pretended to be a scientist,” Crutchfield said. “I got out of school and did artwork. Follow your heart.”

The Floating Folk Festival presented their 15th Anniversary concert at Artemis Gallery Friday, June 1st at 6pm.There was three stages of music during the evening featuring Pam McCarthy, Norman Nortledorf, Meade Skelton, Harry Gore, Brooke Saunders, Chuck Kerwath, Chris Branch, Wendy Paace and much more!   The Floating Folk Festival was created by Brook Saunders in 1997 as a musical co-op that “floated around” many different venues in Richmond. The first show was held at the Main Street Grill on July 17th, and there have been hundreds more over the years.   As the Floating Folk Festival developed, it has added many more artists, even a bit of a rock and roll scene! The Festival has received a lot of attention over the years, by 1998 the organization was on the cover of the Weekender section in the Times Dispatch, had the first of three compilation CD released by Plan 9 Records, and was playing venues small and large throughout the area. But the core group always remained and stayed active in various ways, and has chosen Artemis Gallery to celebrate all of the hard work over the years to help make Richmond a great music town.

designed to make heads turn when walking down the street!

decorated bras or our outlandish sunglasses, even our
Mardi Gras masks, let us present Fashion Runway Boots!
Artists such as Anna Zaccaria, John Crutchfield, Debbie
Talman, Lindsey Phillips and Tunde Hidvegi will feature
these boots in a runway show on First Friday, May the 4th.
We will walk every hour, on the hour from 7 until 9pm.

Reconstructive Viewpoints Photographic Chronicals at Artemis First Fridays April 6th

Photographic Chronicles  of the Huguenot Bridge by Bruce Yoder and  other Richmond perspectives by Keith Deringer.

We often take for
granted the beautiful bits of natural and
manmade elements surrounding us each day.
Thankfully, we have two emerging photographers in
our own backyard to remind us of these easily missed gifts.
The chronicles of the Huguenot Bridge upgrade often brings to mind
questions, frustrations, and sometimes delays as we cross from one suburb
of Richmond to another. Bruce Yoder spent many Saturday and Sunday
afternoons walking across the 63 year old bridge capturing the beauty of
natural elements both before and during their transformations into manmade
use. Surprisingly stunning photographs are now his gift to us as we
vicariously slow down and take the time to just look.
Similarly, freelance photographer Keith Deringer shares his passion for the
beauty in the world around us as he takes shots of both nature and people.
Deringer’s photo art also provides a behind-the-scenes look at many
Richmond art gatherings and socials, rituals (the great American game of
baseball with Richmond’s own Flying Squirrels), and the energy
thus produced.
Come out and join Artemis Gallery as we celebrate two great local emerging
photographers, live music, and light refreshments throughout the evening!
Artworks will be available for viewing throughout the month of April on
Saturdays from 12-5PM and all other times by appointment when you
call 804-353-2676.

“Mythical Mosaics & Boxes of Light” First Friday Opening March 2, 2012!

Mythical Mosaics & Boxes of Light:
Upcycled treasures by Tunde Hidvegi and stained glass candle holders by Meredith Snyder

Friday, March 2, 2012
5-10PM

World traveler Tunde Hidvegi, a native of Hungary, creates wonderful upcycled mosaics with found objects from all around the world. Upcycling is a term used to describe the process whereby one takes old objects and recycles them into something of more value than their original worth. Telling both her own stories alongside old European myths, Hidvegi takes the realm of mosaic tile art to another dimension. Creating two-dimensional surface designs and adding elements of relief sculpture to finish off each composition, somehow she arranges each quirky element so naturally that things like watches , pearls, old china, wood, and doll-body parts look as though they were made this way originally.

Alongside the similar aesthetic of Hidvegi’s mosaics and stories one will enjoy local artist Meredith Snyder’s beautifully rendered stained glass boxes of light (or more simply, candle holders). Stained glass mainly featured brightly colored arrangements of glass in old cathedrals to tell religious stories across Europe for centuries. However, since its use in churches greatly diminished in the 20th century, artists like Snyder now use the technique to start their own picture-stories or create functional objects. Inside the colorful jagged boxes emanates the lovely glow from tea lights, making the perfect housewarming gift for someone or to set the mood in your own home (for beginning your own new story).

Enjoy light refreshments and live music by local Governor’s School students as they play live jazz and other lively sounds throughout the evening!  Artworks will be available for viewing throughout the month of March on Saturdays from 12-5PM and all other times by appointment when you call 804-353-2676.

Artemis Gallery’s “Eros & Arrows” Show Featured in the Richmond Times Dispatch!

Artemis Gallery’s Eros & Arrows show was featured in the Richmond Times Dispatch’s Thursday Weekend edition. Jo Lord, their arts writer did a great job describing our event; you’re most welcome to review or read what she had to say!

Article:

“In a nod to Valentine’s Day, Artemis Gallery is showing “Eros & Arrows,” a show of Valentine cards made by local artists. The idea was to avoid the saccharine-sweet messages of store-bought cards and to express the emotions associated with love in a different way. One card, for instance, shows a handsome young man on the cover. Inside, there’s a vampire and references to romance sucking the blood out of lovers.

Artists represented in the show include Emily Creery Thomas, John Crutchfield,Laura Goetz, Charles O’Donovan, Ginger Pennington, Jessica Pittman Jones, Awest Subagja, Debbie Talman, Dawn Vass and Dennis Wymer.

The gallery will add new cards to the show until the end of its run.

The exhibit runs through March 2 at 1601 W. Main St.
Hours are Wednesday through Friday from 4 to 7 p.m., Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. and on First Fridays.

For details, call (804) 353-2676 or visit www.artemisgalleryrichmond.com.
– Jo Lord”

Thanks to those who came out and if you missed the opening, be sure to make an appointment in the gallery before the show ends March 1,2012!

“Contours in Glass” October 7th!

Ever since Harvey Littleton during the ‘40s created the first at home studio furnace, independent glass artists have struggled with originality. Glass can be both hard and soft depending on its temperature. Two totally different glass artists use the molten material to create sculptures of the most original and creative styles.

Grant Garmezy, with his expert glass sculpting talent, creates creatures of nature both loved and hated. In his words, “For the past six years I have been making sculptural glass objects with the intention of pushing the boundaries of glass sculpting to create something new and original. My most recent pieces are re-creations of familiar animal images that bring out human emotion and expression through movement and personality. By using these familiar images, I’m able to take my viewers into a scene where the relationship between human and animal become blurred.”

Corey Pemberton on the other hand is inspired by the great Venetian Glass Blowers whose vessels bring back the beauty of classic antiquity. In the artist’s words, “My work is a sort of meditative process. It is a way for me to zone out and forget about anything troubling or burdensome that may be happening in my life or in the world. It is a way to escape, mentally, if only for a moment. It is an escape from all of the absurdity that surrounds us everyday.”

Unbalanced Symmetry

“Unbalanced Symmetry” Ceramic Works by Valerie West at Artemis Gallery Sept 2nd!

In 1951 Peter Voulkos smashed his pottery, making it the first
nonfunctional ceramics piece ever made. Ever since then
ceramics artists like Valerie West have strived to find beauty
in pure and simple forms and colors; rather than making its
functionality the main focus.

For her the integration of the hand in the clay and the final
shape become inseperable. Just like the words of a poet, the
clay artist finds solace in the curvalinear shapes and colors;
creating organic plant-like apendages and vessels. She explains:

“To elaborate, I take the basic ideas behind traditional
pottery techniques: throwing, trimming, pulling and attaching
handles; then build the pieces together into unconventional
shapes pushing the balancing ability of the clay to turn
functional vessels into nonfunctional forms.”

As an accomplished exhibiting artist Valerie West will show
her work at Artemis Gallery in a solo show Sept 2nd – Oct 3rd
with a reception First Friday the 2nd as well as Friday Sept 9th.
