Artemis gallery presents Speakeasy #4

This was an amazing experience and fun event as described by the last attendees… the weather was perfect!
Our Fourth Music event named Speakeasy#4 which occurred Friday September 11th is coming up soon on Friday 5-10pm at the Artemis gallery! This is an underground art & music event for VIP & invited guests
only with access to the gallery thru back door
the stage was set up on the back porch and was perfect for the 4 Musicians that performed live!


Last time it was Heid Canzanelli, Brett Zwerding, Chris Branch, and Roger Kohler. Piano Guitars & Turkish double neck Flute!
Lots of delicious food & drinks and barbecue provided by Josh Venner our neighbor! (no one was left hungry!) We spread out throughout the parking lot as well plenty of social distancing with masks.. those who ventured inside the Artemis gallery were treated to a Special “mystery Martini”.  Next one will be August 21st Summer Solstice celebration !

I’m getting ready for my Second event post Covid BLM re-opening “Speakeasy” underground art & music event for VIP only with access through the back door only!
This will be a special send off to Diane Clement who is moving to Arizona permanently. This will be the last chance to say goodbye to her! Believe it or not, she was the very first artist to show her works at Artemis when we opened in 1997, and to do an outdoor spray painting of our Male model Guy Barnard Bernard!
We are setting up back porch for live music and food drink ! It’s on July 10th “Martini Fridays” you and your partner are invited!!! 7-10pm. We so need a good celebration to get over all this negative energy! Bring your guitar(bring your Mask!!) and play too it’s mostly acoustic!

Making Waves: A collection of works by artist Judith Schwab

will be featuring the impactful work
of environmental artist Judith Schwab. The show, titled
Making Waves, will be up First Friday April 4th through
the month of April!

Judith Schwab is an Environmental Artist whose work has
been featured in numerous shows around the world, including
the traveling exhibition Woman Collared for Work, which
Schwab curated. She has received many awards including the
Individual Artist Cultural Arts Award from Broward County,
the Delaware Division of the Arts Opportunity Grant in
Painting, and the Facilitator James T Doty Award for the
International Art for Peace Project. Judith Schwab was also an
Honorary Professor at the Xi’an Art School in Xi’an, China. Her
work is heavily influenced by the social and environmental
conditions of the world.

Come and see the unique work at Artemis Gallery
this First Friday April 4th from 5-10 pm!

The artist will give a lecture and speech on her environmental
works at 8:00 pm Friday and again at 3:00pm on Saturday! Free and
open to the public, you are welcome to stop by!

On November 1st, 2013 Artemis Gallery featured top metal artists in our First Friday show Millenium Metals 2013! The Millennium Metal Show 2013 celebrates the creative spirit of metal smiths everywhere and the end of 2013. This metal will feature mixed media works by artists and their unique final statements on society and the hereafter. Includedare works in 3-D miniature sculptures, multiple metals, wood, graphics, accessories, jewelry and more…

A decade has passed since Artemis Gallery was chosen to host the SNAG Conference International Metal Show “Millenium Metal 2001.” The current show strives to update the current metal work of several artists who were there and many new undiscovered metalsmiths…

The metalsmiths featured in the show included well-known artists Arthur Hash, Robert Ebendorf, Susie Ganch, John T Crutchfield, Donna D’Aquino, and C. James Meyer. The show also featured young up-and-coming metalsmiths Rebecca Holt, Michelle Selwyn, Ginny Rush, Danielle Andrea as well as VMFA Fellowship Award winner Brittany Arnold.

The focus of the show was cutting edge mixed media metals and included many first time seen objects of art!

Artemis Gallery presents “Garmezy Glass & Friends” First Friday September 6th!

Artemis Gallery presents “Garmezy Glass & Friends” featuring the highly individualistic glass work of up and coming artist Grant Garmezy and other glass artists. On display First Friday September 6th, 2013 through the end of September. 5pm-10pm. 1601 W Main St.

Grant Garmezy is a professional glass artist based out of Richmond, Virginia. Grant, originally from Nashville Tennessee, received his BFA from Virginia Commonwealth School of the Arts. Grant is known for his natural life-like glass sculptural work that can be seen both nationally and internationally. For almost ten years he has been making sculptural glass objects with the intention of pushing the boundaries of glass sculpting to create something new and original.Grant’s work will be featured along with glass artists Erin Neff, John Forsythe, Michael Martin, Adam Childress, Lucy Gillis, and Sean Donlon.

Also to be featured are Sports Cars by car restoration specialist Ken Knehr, who details Ferrari, Alpha Romeo, Maserati, Porsche, and other sports cars!

Chrysalis Metamorphic Silk Light Sculptures by Barbara Woods

Artemis Gallery is currently featuring Silk Lantern Light Sculptures by Barbara Woods!

Barbara Woods is an artist from Santa Fe, New Mexico. Her experience in the textile industry dates back over 30 years and includes designing and constructing everything from ski parkas and large tents to a clothing line and functional art. In 1988 she began studying the eastern techniques of Shibori, Katazome and Batik while experimenting with surface design on textile.

The Gutta Serti technique is her preferred choice for silk-painting. A strong background in tailoring and pattern drafting allowed her to create unique one-of-a-kind clothing. From 1990 through 1996 Barbara owned and operated the Wood silks Clothing Gallery in Santa Fe. Wood silks Clothing Gallery represented her work as well as works by textile artists from around the USA. The gallery specialized in custom hand-painted silk clothing, loomed knits and hand-weaving serving a worldwide clientele. In 1996 she closed the retail gallery to concentrate on her art.

Appealing to a broader audience, Barbara developed and sold a line of painted silk lampshades for the Buyers Market of American Crafts in Philadelphia. Then in 1998 she began designing a silk & ceramic sculptural light. Working in slab-constructed clay she carves and forms the bases and bodies. Using patinas and paint she adds color to go with the painted silk. The results are free standing lighted sculptures and sconces, some depicting winged wall creatures. She continues developing unique lamp shades in painted silk in a collaborative effort with H. Tom Thomas, her husband and partner.

Hudson River Beach Glass at Artemis Gallery!

Artemis Gallery is currently showing a beautiful selection of Hudson River Beach Glass!

“Our works are a collaboration grounded in texture, color, and the infinite viscosity of glass.”

For more than 18 years, Hudson Beach Glass- comprised of artists John Gilvey, Wendy Gilvey, Michael Benzer, and Jennifer Smith- have designed  and produced an original line of sculptural tabletop glass works in an amazing pallete of 14 rich gemstone colors.

To date, Hudson Beach Glass artists have experimented with a variety of glass techniques, including lamp working, casting, traditional freehand blowing and mold blowing.

Combining functionality with elegance, Hudson Beach designs are inspired and excited by forms found in the natural environment. Many of their pieces are used by food stylists for publications such as Food and Wine, Bon Appetite, and Gourmet Magazine. They have also appeared on several cooking shows on Television’s Food Network. The Hudson Beach Glass line has expanded over the years to include functional serving pieces as well as perfume bottles, jars, and bar ware. It has been well received by galleries and gift stores across the nation and internationally.

Sylvie Harwin is a California artist who works in anodized aluminum-
a colorization process converting silver aluminum into multiple colors
through electrolysis. Sylvie makes a widely distributed line of “high tech”
jewelry that has been seen in many films such as Star Trek. Her work is in
private collections throughout the United States.
Jim and Tori Mullan of Mullanium work using recycled metal parts
to create jewelry with organic plant and animal themes. The couple
combined their individual talents and formed a partnership in work and
life. Their fascination with birds, nature, and antiques is still present
today and their vast collection of vintage hardware, bird carvings, and
watches fill up a 3300 square foot studio in Pompano Beach, Florida.
Jim and Tori’s collections can be found in over 1,000 galleries, museum
stores and specialty stores worldwide.
John Teal Crutchfield of Metallic Art Graphics works using a unique
graphics art technique which he applies to a high quality brass base
and casts in a durable clear fiberglass encasement. The purpose of his
designs is to evoke the inner desires of one wishing to escape from the
present to explore the past civilizations of ancient Egypt, Greece, and
Persia. To achieve these results, John draws on his influences from his
studies in Europe. His work has been photographed, written about, and
showcased in several galleries including the Amsterdam Whitney Gallery
in New York and the Artemis Gallery in Richmond, VA.

Artemis Gallery will present unique challenging art glass by up and coming young artists who challenge Dale Chihuly’s concepts of
decorative art.

For years, Dale Chihuly has been
impressing museums and collectors with his over done decorative glass
chandeliers that are dificult to install and can only be hung with his
15 associates.

At Artemis, you will see refreshing
new glass that you can instal yourself and be able to enjoy for years.

New color, new technique, and new artists will show a contradictory vision to Chihuly’s museum show and more
accurately represent the next
generation in glass.

John T. Crutchfield listed as a Top Artist in Richmond Times Dispatch, Sunday July 29th 2012

RICHMOND, Va. –A band played outside Artemis Gallery as dusk set on Richmond’s Main Street.

People were standing outside the art opening, but there was one character you

couldn’t miss. John T. Crutchfield was wearing large sunglasses with metallic

stripes across the lenses (he made them himself), a straw hat and a scarf.

Crutchfield, the owner of Artemis Gallery, specializes in metallic art graphics. The lights

in the gallery sparkle on his customized musical instruments with metallic features and

nostalgic images. His work has been featured on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and in Vogue.

He participates in art and music festivals and has applied his art to a $10,000 guitar for musician

Robert Francis, who toured with singer Jason Mraz. Crutchfield’s art also has appeared at

the Amsterdam Whitney Gallery in New York.

Crutchfield started putting customized designs on instruments after a musician gave him a broken guitar.

But his style extends beyond instruments and includes jewelry, clocks, sculptures and more.

Ever since he was 5, art has been a part of his life. His parents wanted him to be a scientist.

“I pretended to be a scientist,” Crutchfield said. “I got out of school and did artwork. Follow your heart.”

The Floating Folk Festival 15th Anniversary First Friday June 1st at Artemis

The Floating Folk Festival presented their 15th Anniversary concert at Artemis Gallery Friday, June 1st at 6pm.There was three stages of music during the evening featuring Pam McCarthy, Norman Nortledorf, Meade Skelton, Harry Gore, Brooke Saunders, Chuck Kerwath, Chris Branch, Wendy Paace and much more!   The Floating Folk Festival was created by Brook Saunders in 1997 as a musical co-op that “floated around” many different venues in Richmond. The first show was held at the Main Street Grill on July 17th, and there have been hundreds more over the years.   As the Floating Folk Festival developed, it has added many more artists, even a bit of a rock and roll scene! The Festival has received a lot of attention over the years, by 1998 the organization was on the cover of the Weekender section in the Times Dispatch, had the first of three compilation CD released by Plan 9 Records, and was playing venues small and large throughout the area. But the core group always remained and stayed active in various ways, and has chosen Artemis Gallery to celebrate all of the hard work over the years to help make Richmond a great music town.

 

 

 

These Boots are Made for Walking, Runway Fashion Show at Artemis Gallery May 4th First Friday

A Runway Fashion, Photoshoot, & Music Event First Friday May 4th.

Artemis Gallery presents a Fashion Runway show featuring
hand-painted Cavalli inspired boots used for rain or fashion wear.
We are calling artists from all over the Richmond area assemble
for an intense workshop on April 21st. Then the fun begins by
creating outlandish and creative galoshes and fashion boots
designed to make heads turn when walking down the street!

Haven’t you been at a rainy summer outdoor music festival?
Or been caught in a rainstorm only to wish you had some
knee high boots instead of your soaking wet sneakers covered
in mud? Let this be your problem solver!

Artemis Gallery, in a long tradition of workshops like our
decorated bras or our outlandish sunglasses, even our
Mardi Gras masks, let us present Fashion Runway Boots!
Artists such as Anna Zaccaria, John Crutchfield, Debbie
Talman, Lindsey Phillips and Tunde Hidvegi will feature
these boots in a runway show on First Friday, May the 4th.
We will walk every hour, on the hour from 7 until 9pm.

 

 

Reconstructive Viewpoints Photographic Chronicals at Artemis First Fridays April 6th

Photographic Chronicles  of the Huguenot Bridge by Bruce Yoder and  other Richmond perspectives by Keith Deringer.

We often take for
granted the beautiful bits of natural and
manmade elements surrounding us each day.
Thankfully, we have two emerging photographers in
our own backyard to remind us of these easily missed gifts.
The chronicles of the Huguenot Bridge upgrade often brings to mind
questions, frustrations, and sometimes delays as we cross from one suburb
of Richmond to another. Bruce Yoder spent many Saturday and Sunday
afternoons walking across the 63 year old bridge capturing the beauty of
natural elements both before and during their transformations into manmade
use. Surprisingly stunning photographs are now his gift to us as we
vicariously slow down and take the time to just look.
Similarly, freelance photographer Keith Deringer shares his passion for the
beauty in the world around us as he takes shots of both nature and people.
Deringer’s photo art also provides a behind-the-scenes look at many
Richmond art gatherings and socials, rituals (the great American game of
baseball with Richmond’s own Flying Squirrels), and the energy
thus produced.
Come out and join Artemis Gallery as we celebrate two great local emerging
photographers, live music, and light refreshments throughout the evening!
Artworks will be available for viewing throughout the month of April on
Saturdays from 12-5PM and all other times by appointment when you

“Mythical Mosaics & Boxes of Light” First Friday Opening March 2, 2012!

Mythical Mosaics & Boxes of Light:
Upcycled treasures by Tunde Hidvegi and stained glass candle holders by Meredith Snyder

World traveler Tunde Hidvegi, a native of Hungary, creates wonderful upcycled mosaics with found objects from all around the world. Upcycling is a term used to describe the process whereby one takes old objects and recycles them into something of more value than their original worth. Telling both her own stories alongside old European myths, Hidvegi takes the realm of mosaic tile art to another dimension. Creating two-dimensional surface designs and adding elements of relief sculpture to finish off each composition, somehow she arranges each quirky element so naturally that things like watches , pearls, old china, wood, and doll-body parts look as though they were made this way originally.

Alongside the similar aesthetic of Hidvegi’s mosaics and stories one will enjoy local artist Meredith Snyder’s beautifully rendered stained glass boxes of light (or more simply, candle holders). Stained glass mainly featured brightly colored arrangements of glass in old cathedrals to tell religious stories across Europe for centuries. However, since its use in churches greatly diminished in the 20th century, artists like Snyder now use the technique to start their own picture-stories or create functional objects. Inside the colorful jagged boxes emanates the lovely glow from tea lights, making the perfect housewarming gift for someone or to set the mood in your own home (for beginning your own new story).

 

Enjoy light refreshments and live music by local Governor’s School students as they play live jazz and other lively sounds throughout the evening!  Artworks will be available for viewing throughout the month of March on Saturdays from 12-5PM and all other times by appointment when you call 804-353-2676.

    World traveler Tunde Hidvegi, a native of Hungary, creates wonderful upcycled mosaics with found objects from all around the world. Upcycling is a term used to describe the process whereby one takes old objects and recycles them into something of more value than their original worth. Telling both her own stories alongside old European myths, Hidvegi takes the realm of mosaic tile art to another dimension. Creating two-dimensional surface designs and adding elements of relief sculpture to finish off each composition, somehow she arranges each quirky element so naturally that things like watches , pearls, old china, wood, and doll-body parts look as though they were made this way originally.

    Alongside the similar aesthetic of Hidvegi’s mosaics and stories one will enjoy local artist Meredith Snyder’s beautifully rendered stained glass boxes of light (or more simply, candle holders). Stained glass mainly featured brightly colored arrangements of glass in old cathedrals to tell religious stories across Europe for centuries. However, since its use in churches greatly diminished in the 20th century, artists like Snyder now use the technique to start their own picture-stories or create functional objects. Inside the colorful jagged boxes emanates the lovely glow from tea lights, making the perfect housewarming gift for someone or to set the mood in your own home (for beginning your own new story).

    Enjoy light refreshments and live music by local Governor’s School students as they play live jazz and other lively sounds throughout the evening! Artworks will be available for viewing throughout the month of March on Saturdays from 12-5PM and all other times by appointment when you call 804-353-2676.

“In a nod to Valentine’s Day, Artemis Gallery is showing “Eros & Arrows,” a show of Valentine cards made by local artists. The idea was to avoid the saccharine-sweet messages of store-bought cards and to express the emotions associated with love in a different way. One card, for instance, shows a handsome young man on the cover. Inside, there’s a vampire and references to romance sucking the blood out of lovers.

Artists represented in the show include Emily Creery Thomas, John Crutchfield,Laura Goetz, Charles O’Donovan, Ginger Pennington, Jessica Pittman Jones, Awest Subagja, Debbie Talman, Dawn Vass and Dennis Wymer.

“Contours in Glass” October 7th!

Ever since Harvey Littleton during the ‘40s created the first at home studio furnace, independent glass artists have struggled with originality. Glass can be both hard and soft depending on its temperature. Two totally different glass artists use the molten material to create sculptures of the most original and creative styles.

Grant Garmezy, with his expert glass sculpting talent, creates creatures of nature both loved and hated. In his words, “For the past six years I have been making sculptural glass objects with the intention of pushing the boundaries of glass sculpting to create something new and original. My most recent pieces are re-creations of familiar animal images that bring out human emotion and expression through movement and personality. By using these familiar images, I’m able to take my viewers into a scene where the relationship between human and animal become blurred.”

Corey Pemberton on the other hand is inspired by the great Venetian Glass Blowers whose vessels bring back the beauty of classic antiquity. In the artist’s words, “My work is a sort of meditative process. It is a way for me to zone out and forget about anything troubling or burdensome that may be happening in my life or in the world. It is a way to escape, mentally, if only for a moment. It is an escape from all of the absurdity that surrounds us everyday.”

These past two Fridays at Artemis Gallery were a blast! Ceramics Artist Valerie West made her appearance both nights and spoke with friends, family, professors, and art enthusiasts about her work and her many techniques! She even brought honey from her own bee hive!

If you did not get a chance to make it out either nights to the show, feel free to stop by during the rest of this month during our weekly hours of  W – F between 2 and 7pm and Sat 12 – 5pm! We’d be happy to show you around!

Also featured both evenings were the lovely ladies of Sueños Gitanos playing flamenco guitar outside the gallery.

Unbalanced Symmetry

“Unbalanced Symmetry” Ceramic Works by Valerie West at Artemis Gallery Sept 2nd!

In 1951 Peter Voulkos smashed his pottery, making it the first
nonfunctional ceramics piece ever made. Ever since then
ceramics artists like Valerie West have strived to find beauty
in pure and simple forms and colors; rather than making its
functionality the main focus.

For her the integration of the hand in the clay and the final
shape become inseperable. Just like the words of a poet, the
clay artist finds solace in the curvalinear shapes and colors;
creating organic plant-like apendages and vessels. She explains:

“To elaborate, I take the basic ideas behind traditional
pottery techniques: throwing, trimming, pulling and attaching
handles; then build the pieces together into unconventional
shapes pushing the balancing ability of the clay to turn
functional vessels into nonfunctional forms.”

As an accomplished exhibiting artist Valerie West will show
her work at Artemis Gallery in a solo show Sept 2nd – Oct 3rd
with a reception First Friday the 2nd as well as Friday Sept 9th.

Last week CBS invited us to be featured on Virginia This Morning to talk about our show “Sunglasses & Rock N Roll” at Artemis Gallery! John Crutchfield brought some of the sunglasses we made to the studio along with hand decorated well crafted guitars to showcase during the interview. Metallic Art Graphics featured at Top Music Festivals & Fine Art Festivals All Summer 2011!

This year as the school year ends, the gallery season slows down, and
the Summer heats up, John Crutchfield & MAG take to the road to be
featured in some of the top music festivals and fine art craft shows.

This year’s lineup includes:
Gold Coast Fine Art Show (Amdur Productions) Chicago July 7th – 10th
The WXPN Xponential Music Festival in Philadelphia July 21st – 24th
FloydFest Music Festival in Floyd, VA July 28th – 31st
Newport Jazz Festival in Newport, RI August 5th – 7th
Philadelphia Folk Festival August 18th – 21st

At each of these juried music & art festivals, John Crutchfield will display
his mixed media Fine Art and Accessories including his famous Decorative
Inlaid Graphic Guitars. Last year several famous musicians like Chris Botti
signed his guitars and mandolins, while Robert Francis who was touring
with Jason Mraz at the time had commissioned a White Falcon Guitar
(featured on Jay Leno & Vogue Magazine).

This year we are looking forward to some stellar music and exciting

Due to unexpected circumstances we have a few openings for individual
artists to be Artist of the Month. This consists of prominent exposure in the
central part of the gallery. You would be the featured artist in our press

Artemis Gallery presents a decorative sunglasses show in tribute to the summer and music festivals!

During the Summer months of travel, beach vacations, music festivals, and poolside parties, you need a good pair of sunglasses to shield you from the glare of the sun.

This year with a fashion runway show behind us and hit music festivals coming up all summer, John Crutchfield and a team of talented artists will make and create high fashion decorated sunglasses to wear all summer to the beach, to the swimming pool, and to the music festivals.

During a live studio session at the Metallic Art Graphics Studio, several artists will create these high fashion outrageous glasses to be exhibited at Artemis Gallery July 1st.

“Artistic Leather” Coming to Artemis First Friday May 6th!

Paul Beverly and Sandy Dyche are leather artisans. Every single part of every piece they make is made from leather, all the way down to the tiniest of details! They make everything from your standard leather accessories like belts, bags, and jewelry, to motorcycles, sheep, doll houses, even swords! You name it, they make it out of leather!

This month we are featuring their work at Artemis Gallery! Come join us for adventures in leather and see the endless uses of this medium there really is!

Their techniques to creating these creative works involve just three simple steps. “We create paper patterns as guides for cutting out the leather. The type of leather chosen is
important. Different types of leather are needed for different textures, looks and overall feel of the finished product.” Once the leather is cut, they use various tools and dyes to
create different colors and textures. After creating a shape through wet molding, the finishing touches are then added.

Paul started doing leather work in the 60s, but in meeting Sandy added a nice creative flare to his work and they have been making these wonderful leather pieces together for 15 years.

“Wired Realities” Opening at Artemis Gallery First Friday April 1st!

This April we will be celebrating the beginning of Spring with “Wired Realities” at Artemis Gallery! This show will be featuring the work of local artists Guy Barnard and Bob Early and their wire sculptures.

Their work is often described as three dimensional blind contour drawings. As if they drew it on paper and turned it into a sculptural piece of work.

In Bob’s own words he says, “The inspiration for my art comes from a lifetime of relentless curiosity of how things work and what’s inside. From my need to take things apart comes the wonderment of finding ways to make the parts into something new and amazing. Also a big part of my inspiration comes from
nature and my fascination of bugs and wildlife. Combining the two I try to achieve works of art which inspire their own curiosities and fascinations. Whether it is complex as with Musical Gears or as simple as my Reflecting Fish, my overall goal is to achieve an emotion connection to my work.”

The show will also be featuring live music and will run until May 5th. So come celebrate the birth of Spring with us at Artemis Gallery!

March Madness Masquerade!

It has become an annual tradition at Artemis Gallery to celebrate Mardi Gras and the festival that started it all, the Venice Carnival! This year we are hosting a Masquerade in style as Keith Deringer, professional photographer, will be photographing the entire event!

Karmalita Bawar Featured in Style Weekly!

Artist Karmalita Bawar has had her hand made paper flower pins and brooches featured in our gallery in the past, and now has been featured in the last issue of Style Weekly! Her recent batch of paper flower brooches were actually made from pages of Style using a paper technique she learned while living in Japan. Read the article below!

Sculptor does her art with Style. Literally.

Of the many possible fates for old issues of Style Weekly, what Karmalita Bawar does with them may be the most attractive. Instead of using the publications to start fires or line bird cages, she fashions them into flower brooches. “They look nice on hats, scarves, purses,” Bawar says. “They’re just a nice, unique accessory.”

A Suzuki piano teacher since 1989, Bawar periodically travels to Japan to study this type of paper art. Last April she stayed with a Japanese family in Matsumoto. The grandmother taught her the craft of making paper flowers, sending her home with a bamboo skewer, templates cut out of a discarded box, and the “green electrical plastic tube things” that she uses to crimp the paper. They promptly broke, so she took them to Lowe’s, replacing them with something she found near the nuts and bolts section. Exactly what the new plastic tubes are called or what their given purpose is remains a mystery.

The flowers started out as something she just made and gave away. “After six hours a day of teaching piano, I want silence,” Bawar says. “So this is a really quiet, personal thing.” People began asking if they could buy them, “and next thing you know, I’m cranking them out.”

She adds her own touch to the process, using glitter in the form of nail polish to accent the flowers. “When I got my hands on them, I thought I needed to make it American and fun and colorful,” she says. “The grandmother who taught me would just scream if she saw these. These are very gaudy for Japan.”

Style works as a medium, she says, because of the colorful photos and because she can pick up a free one anywhere. (She swears that she reads the issue first and then chooses pages based on color combinations.) Carefully cut shapes from the Dec. 8 issue feature centenarian Virginia Ann Henry Shelton, actor Katrinah Lewis and musician Prabir Mehta. Under her deft fingers, they quickly become a paper flower. “It’s a great group of local people,” Bawar says. “You can’t get them together at a party, but you can get them together in a brooch.”

Cynthia Erdahl: Now Appreciated Internationally!

Recently at Artemis Gallery, art collectors and professors of Sociology from Oxford, England came to visit us while on a business trip in DC to pick out a piece of work for their home. Doctor Teresa Harms and husband Johnathan Gershuny FBA took a particular interest in the work of Cynthia Erdahl and picked out two of her paintings.

Now much to her satisfaction, Cynthia can say her work is appreciated by an international audience!
